September 5, 2002:
Found two daguerreotypes in a box of family photos. I decide to attempt to scan them on my home scanner. It is not successful. Because the daguerreotypes are still in their glass and leather cases the scanner's laser reflects on the glass. So my next option was to take them to a professional photographer.
September 12, 2002:
I have dropped off the two daguerreotypes at Jasper Ewing and Son Photography in Jackson, MS. They will make an interneg of them.
Septemeber 20, 2002:
Go by Jasper Ewing and Son Photography to pick up daguerreotypes and prints: two color 4x6 prints of the daguerreotypes; two black and white 2x3 prints of the daguerreotypes; and one negative strip with four images on the negative, two of each daguerreotype.
September 5-23, 2002:
I begin organizing all other family photos. I have purchased archive quality clear plastic sleeves to hold pictures and negatives. After organizing photos by person, I then prganized photos in chronological order as best as I could assume. After placing photos in plastic sleeves and then putting those into a binder, I took tiny yellow round labels and placed numbers on them, sticking them to the outside of the sleeve next to each picture. This is to help identify pictures later.
September 28, 2002:
Begin scanning pictures, saving images to the hard drive into a folder titled "Old Family Photos." I also scan backs of pictures which have significant amounts of writing on them.
October 4, 2002:
Created folders on the hard drive for each person, titling the folders the name of the individual in the pictures. File names for pictures are part of the name of the person; ie. Frances "Fannie" Gorin Grider is fanniegrider1.jpg or fanniegrider.html. Another example is Emilie Elizabeth Payne Shropshire has filenames emilie1.jpg and emilie.html, because her first name is unique in the family tree. I began moving files into their appropriate folders on the C: Drive.
October 6, 2002:
Began creating html files for viewing the pictures. Uploaded the images for the ambrotypes (I had discovered that what I thought were daguerreotypes were actually ambrotypes) and organized them on the webpage. I was advised by Blake Harris how to create "thumbnails" which showed the smaller images in proportion to their original size, keeping a height of 100 pixels.
October 6-20, 2002:
Continued creating individual pages for other individuals in the family tree. Finished organizing the pages for Fannie Grider, James M. Grider, Emily Payne, Tom Payne, Emilie Shropshire, Ryland Shropshire, Kay Heller, Tommy Shropshire, and Doss Shropshire.
October 22, 2002:
Found cascading style sheet (.css) to use on the webpage, thus redesigning the pages already created to meet the new format and style.
October 24, 2002:
Picked up Tommy Shropshire's family photos and began scanning them over the next few days. Some are of Kay, some are of Doss, and others are of his mother Emilie, and then of course some of his chidlren Jan and Jill, and his second wife Cathy.
November 1, 2002:
Began writing text for the website. Created a Glossary, Resource Links, and included Copyright. Incorporated mini-gloassaries on the pages which refer to a term that needs a definition, ie, the ambrotypes page mentions daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes, all three of which are defined at the bottom of the page, with a page jump to make navigation easier. Reffered to City gallery's website often because of its excellent in-depth definition, examples, and other data.
November 5, 2002:
Uploaded all newly scanned images. Scanning takes place everyday. Editing and revising of pages takes place everyday. I am a perfectionist. Images are moved around on the page so that they closely resemble a kind of chronological order.
November 7-12, 2002:
Finally managed to get the photo albums from Doss Shropshire. Organized all pictures by events, then tried to organize them by chronological order. Uploaded images of Doss. Edited the pages and revised the design for better viewing.
November 13-26, 2002:
Began writing text by each picture. Trying to be consistent and keeping the format the same, I attempted to keep text written on the back of the pictures differientated from text deescribing and explaining the pictures.
November 22-24, 2002:
Wrote introduction to website. Posted more in-depth information about individuals' genealogical facts and dates. Continued writing more text to each picture.
November 26, 2002:
Revised page some more; edited and added more to webpage's introduction.
December 5, 2002:
Finished typing up project journal, and uploaded it onto the webpage.
Future Goals for Website:
It is also my goal and ambition to continue adding pictures, names, and information to this site so that the genealogical background of this family can expand and grow. I am most appreciative to any information, corrections, and suggestions which readers would like to send me, and these can be emailed to me at this address: lauraheller@hotmail.com
